Halloween celebrations start tonight

Could you be the big winner at the Clarendon Ballroom’s annual costume contest? (HiBall Events)
Halloween isn’t until Monday, but there’s no need to wait until then to start celebrating: The festive season kicked off last night with the High Heel Race and continues tonight with the annual pumpkin-carving contest and happy hour at Helix Lounge, where the best jack o’lantern wins a stay at the hotel and everyone can partake of cheap beers, burgers and pumpkin cocktails. Thursday night, the Bier Baron gets in on the pumpkin theme with a pumpkin beer tasting and pumpkin carving contest. (Pumpkin fans should peruse our picks for the best places to get your pumpkin fix.)

Check out our list of the top offbeat Halloween events -- including a doggie costume contest and a heavy metal-themed cocktail event -- or browse our longer list of all Halloween parties and costume contests for adults.

Two last pieces of advice: If you’re heading to any of the big Halloween events downtown this weekend, such as the Nightmare on M Street, you need to read our blog post about how Metro track work could derail your fun. And if you *still* haven’t finished your costume, we’ll have experts from the Backstage costume shop offering advice in tomorrow’s Got Plans? chat. Maybe you’ll win $3,000 in the costume contest at Elliot in the Morning’s Halloween Bash on Friday night.
