Inauguration preparations, and the all-important parties that tend to steal the spotlight, are being announced at a trickle, with two unofficial balls that debuted in 2009 returning for President Obama’s second inauguration next month.
The black-tie Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball will take place at the Harman Center on Jan. 20. The gala, hosted by Russell Simmons’s Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, drew the likes of LL Cool J, T.I. and Nick Cannon in 2009, and just like 2009, VIP tickets will still carry the same eye-popping $2,500 price tag. (Remember what happened in 2009?)
General admission tickets will be $500, including an open bar, food, DJ and a concert, though just who will be playing hasn’t been announced.
Meanwhile, tickets are already on sale for the second Peace Ball, a celebration at Arena Stage aimed at social justice activists, with sponsors including Busboys and Poets and Code Pink. The event sold out in 2009, with more than 1,300 guests donning their finest for a night that began with chanting and featured performances by Michael Franti and Joan Baez. Tickets for the 2013 edition are $135, including food and an open bar.
