‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’ wins weekend box office

Post critic Sean O’Connell had good things to say about the newest “Ice Age” movie Friday, calling it “outside the box” and describing it as “energetic, inventive and frequently amusing.” Moviegoers this past weekend also demonstrated their interest in seeing the new installment, spending a total of $46 million domestically and shooting “Ice Age” to the top of the weekend’s box office (read more about the success of “Ice Age” at Comic Riffs).

“The Amazing Spider-Man” came in at No. 2 with $35 million in its second weekend in theaters. Here are the weekend’s top 10 movies at the box office (the AP has more details here):

1. “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” $46 million

2. “The Amazing Spider-Man,” $35 million

3. “Ted,” $22.1 million

4. “Brave,” $10.7 million

5. “Magic Mike,” $9 million

6. “Savages,” $8.7 million

7. “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection,” $5.6 million

8. “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” $3.7 million

9. “Moonrise Kingdom,” $3.7 million

10. “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” $3.5 million
