Our picks for the best free events this week, including a John Lewis book signing and the Air Force Cycling Classic.

MONDAY

EuroAsia Shorts screenings

The Goethe Institut screens two German short films — “Raju” and “Uwe+Uwe” — and one Chinese short film, “The Opposite Shore.” The films reflect themes of diversity and multiculturalism and demonstrate how nations around the world are no longer as homogenous as they once were.

TUESDAY

John Lewis

The Georgia congressman and civil rights activist discusses and signs his new book, “Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change,” at Politics & Prose.

WEDNESDAY

Magic for kids

The Great Zucchini brings his hands-on magic show and innate ability to connect with children through his silly antics to a daytime performance in downtown Silver Spring.

THURSDAY

War of 1812 on TV

When it comes to pop culture, the War of 1812 is often forgotten. The Library of Congress’s Packard Campus will screen examples of the conflict between the British Empire and the fledgling United States found in educational videos and fictional television series.

FRIDAY

Historic cooking demonstration

Leni Sorensen, culinary and African American research historian at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, leads several cooking demonstrations based on the recipes of Edith Fossett, an enslaved woman who served as the third president’s cook at the White House.

SATURDAY

Free cake

Occasionally Cake celebrates the grand opening of its second location, in Old Town Alexandria, with free slices of cake, a display of a cake modeled after the George Washington Masonic Memorial, raffle prizes and ceramic cake crafts for kids.

SUNDAY

The Air Force Cycling Classic

Grab a spot along the streets or a table at neighborhood restaurants such as 3 Bar and Grill, Lyon Hall or Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza to see the streets of Clarendon serve as five-turn, breakneck cycling course on Saturday that begins at the Clarendon Metro station. Can’t get enough? Check out speed-of-light racers competing for the Crystal Cup on Sunday — along with kids’ rides and other events.
