With festival season still months away, touring acts mostly disappear from local stages in January, but this month still manages a few gems. Downright gloomy L.A. musician Chelsea Wolfe brings her haunting doom-folk to the Rock & Roll Hotel on Jan. 27, while shaggy surf rocker Ty Segall — who’s poised to be 2013’s breakout rock act — plays the Black Cat on Jan. 31, and we’re betting tickets won’t last long.
Also on our list for the must-see concerts this month: Blonde Redhead. Though the band doesn’t have a new record, the art-rock trio will roll through U Street Music Hall on Jan. 18 for a show that will be its most intimate in years. You can also catch the first sweet notes of Mardi Gras coming from the trombone of Big Sam Williams, frontman of New Orleans jazz-funk group Big Sam’s Funky Nation, when the group hits the Millennium Stage on Jan. 10.
Finally, one of rap’s most influential artists, Big Daddy Kane, will offer a blast from the past at the Howard Theatre on Jan. 25, and the “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’ ” star is bringing along a live band, likely all part of a plan to build hype for a comeback. Snap up tickets to these shows soon. But before you do, listen to tracks from the artists on our January concerts Spotify playlist, below.
