Matchbox to open on 14th Street Nov. 30

Tom Sietsema mentioned it in today’s Ask Tom, but for 14th Street watchers, an update on the new Matchbox across T Street from Cafe Saint-Ex: the latest entry to the matchboxfoodgroup’s portfolio will open Nov. 30 at 4 p.m.

The stately red brick space at 1901 T Street NW has some history. From the release:

The building on 14th Street was erected as a bowling alley and billiards hall in 1907, became an automobile showroom in 1920, transformed into Club Bali, a well known Jazz club featuring artists like Etta James in 1943, and was most recently the rehearsal hall for the Arena Stage theatre company.

(Related: Could someone open a no-frills bowling alley somewhere within the city limits? Shaw maybe?)

The space includes a to-go window and a 25-foot bar stocked with 23 beers and a prosecco tap (because everyone needs a prosecco tap nowadays). Dinner will be served from 4 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with all-day weekend brunch starting at 10 a.m.

The group’s not done with 14th Street, either: Ted’s Bulletin is pegged to open across the street from the new Matchbox in early 2013.
