New movies: ‘50/50,’ ‘Incendiary’

In this week’s new movies, two friends use humor to battle cancer and a Texas execution is carried out despite some big questions as to the guilt of the convicted. Here’s what the Post critics had to say:

Incendiary” (Unrated) “‘Incendiary: The Willingham Case’ provides a gripping, appalling and finally galling tick-tock of justice denied in modern-day Texas.” — Ann Hornaday

50/50” (R) “‘50/50’ takes the hackneyed convention of illness-driven melodrama and reinvigorates it with honesty, clear-eyed compassion and unsentimental wit.” — Ann Hornaday

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” (R) “‘Tucker’ benefits from a sweetness not found in many of its peers, which unlike ‘Shaun of the Dead’ often lean too heavily on cynicism and gore.” — John DeFore

Love Crime” (Unrated) “The movie is called ‘Love Crime.’ But its hidden message has more to do with business than with passion. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Especially one in a power suit, who knows how to work a room.” — Michael O’Sullivan

The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975” (Unrated) “‘The Black Power Mixtape’ may go a long way in energizing young people by awakening them to a history that, although recent by most standards, has literally been beamed from another century.” — Ann Hornaday

Machine Gun Preaher” (R) “From its unfortunate title, ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ sounds like one of those B movies based on a graphic novel - about a disillusioned and emotionally damaged man of the cloth, say, who roams a desolate wasteland dispatching demons with the squeeze of a trigger. The good news is it isn't that movie. The bad news is it's almost as two-dimensional.” — Michael O’Sullivan

What’s Your Number?” (R) “It was funny in ‘Bridesmaids.’ Now, ... it just comes across as desperate.” — Michael O’Sullivan

Mysteries of Lisbon” (Unrated) “Made as a six-hour European TV miniseries, "Mysteries" has been trimmed to four hours and changed for its theatrical release. But this isn't one of those epics that uses length as a bludgeon. Rather than sweep, the movie spirals, twisting its viewpoint to reveal tales within tales.” — Mark Jenkins
