New movies: ‘Cars 2,’ ‘Bad Teacher’

Summer sequel “Cars 2” comes out today. (©Disney/Pixar)
In this week’s new movies, “Cars 2” is visually stunning, “Buck” has a broader appeal than just horse people and “Bad Teacher” is bad (and not in a good way). Here’s what the Post critics had to say:

Bad Teacher” (R) “This fitfully funny but mostly dull misfire defines exactly where the line can be drawn between truly subversive humor and lazy cynicism.” — Ann Hornaday

Cars 2” (G) “‘Cars 2’ boasts eye-popping scenery of far-flung locales and thrilling race sequences. It’s a visually stunning film. Unfortunately, the sequel shortchanges the very relationships that gave the first movie its surprising heart.” — Michael O’Sullivan

Buck” (PG) “You don’t have to be a horse nut to fall for ‘Buck,’ one of those rare documentaries whose subject is so inherently fascinating that a fictional character could hardly compete.” — John DeFore

Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop” (R) “‘Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop’ isn’t the first movie to observe that a lot of comedy comes out of anger or that performers are sometimes emotionally needy people. It isn’t as sad a movie as ‘Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work,’ another behind-the-mask documentary. It’s funnier. But it’s just as illuminating.” — Michael O’Sullivan

Hey, Boo: Harper Lee and ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’” (Unrated) “While much of the movie’s revelations will probably sound familiar to ‘Mockingbird’ fanatics, some viewers might be interested to find out how precarious Lee’s success was.” — Stephanie Merry

Bride Flight” (R) “Moviegoers won’t need to feel any shame purchasing a ticket for the Dutch saga set in New Zealand; lovely scenery and historical context elevate the sentimental story lines above the soap opera domain.” — Stephanie Merry

Viva Riva!” (R) “‘Viva Riva!’ is propulsive, well paced and easy enough to watch, depending on your appetite for bloody violence. What might make it actually compelling is if there were a single character worth rooting for.” — Michael O’Sullivan
