No tree lighting tickets? No problem

If you didn’t win tickets to the National Christmas Tree Lighting Festival, there are plenty of alternatives. (Ricky Carioti - THE WASHINGTON POST)
What’s the hottest ticket in town tonight? It’s not the Caps vs. Penguins game at the Verizon Center; it’s the lighting of the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse. And unlike the hockey game, you’re not going to hear too many scalpers asking, “Who needs tickets?” as you approach the event.

In other words, if you didn’t win the ticket lottery to the tree lighting, you might well be out of luck. Never fear: There are plenty of other festive happenings around town tonight to make up for it.

Shop for Christmas gifts at a traditional German market in Reston; enjoy snacks and free wine at a holiday bazaar at the Sewall-Belmont House; watch as Baltimore’s Washington Monument is illuminated, followed by a fireworks show; and don your Hawaiian best at the Torpedo Factory’s island-themed holiday open house.

If you’re still in the mood for a tree lighting, you’re also in luck: Herndon, Poolesville, Bowie, National Harbor and Manassas are among the jurisdictions that will flip the “on” switch this weekend.

If you really can’t imagine missing tonight’s main event outside the White House — and with guests like Carson Daly, who could? — you can watch a live stream beginning at 4:30 p.m.
