Does family-friendly winery sound like an oxymoron? It’s not necessarily, particularly if your little ones like juice boxes and room to roam, as available at Barrel Oak Winery, in nearby Delaplane.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine just named the winery on the outskirts of Northern Virginia the top family-friendly winery.

Little ones are greeted with juice boxes, and fun photographs of dogs adorn the tasting room walls. Parents can sip the 2010 Bowhaus White, a gold medal winner of the 2010 Indy International Wine Competition, on one of their picnic tables as kids roam the hilly landscape.

Barrel Oak ranked ahead of wineries from California, New York, Australia and France on the magazine’s list, so spare the plane tickets, pack up the kids and a picnic, and take a drive to our local wine country.

Of course, if you are planning a winery outing with people who are of legal drinking age, there’s always this great list of wine, brew and distillery tours in the Virginia countryside.
