International AIDS Conference. After an often somber day of programs, speeches, exhibitions and more to focus attention on the AIDS crisis, those scores of people (you?) will need a place to wind down, or wind up. Here we have our lists of best dining near the Convention Center and best bars near the Convention Center.

Also happening around town, relating to the conference:

• Transformer Gallery presents Mixed Messages: A(I)DS, Art + Words, more than 30 works by artists and designers that illustrate current feelings about HIV/AIDS. The July 24 opening reception and show will be next door at Fathom Gallery.

The International AIDS Film Festival runs through July 28, with films screening at The Carnegie Institute of Science at 1530 P Street NW.

Town Danceboutique is hosting a huge dance party to kick off the conference weekend Saturday. Doors open at 10 p.m. with a drag show at 10:30.

We will update this post as we hear of more related events.
