Plan your weekend: Beauty Pill, Elvis’s Birthday Fight Club

We’ve compiled a list of the best events going on this weekend. Some of our favorites: the multimedia release show for local art-rock band Beauty Pill’s new album, theatrical boxing in honor of Elvis Presley’s birthday and a celebration that will see goats, donkeys and sheep in the streets of D.C.

When most bands play a show marking the release of a new album, they’re content to work through a set of the new material and hope you pick up the new CD. Not Beauty Pill. The local art-rock group won’t be playing a show but using the music from their album, recorded at Artisphere, as part of an interactive multimedia display. It’s something to see, hear and experience.

In the spirit of Vegas showman-era Elvis, head to the Warehouse Theater for costumed, hammed-up boxing matches, featuring The King himself and other old-school heroes squaring off against a group of “subversive villians.” It’s all being held to celebrate what would have been Elvis’s 77th birthday. This may seem entirely random, but in many ways it makes perfect sense.

If you’re near 14th Street on Sunday and see a parade of goats, sheep and donkeys, don’t worry — the animals are part of the GALA Hispanic Theatre’s annual “Fiesta de los Reyes Magos.” The celebration marks the arrival of the three kings’ visit to the newborn baby Jesus. After the procession, head to the theater for costumed performers, dance performances, churros and hot chocolate.
