Plan your weekend: Step Afrika, Super Bowl parties

The dancers of Step Afrika! mark Black History Month with two performances this weekend. (Astrid Riecken - FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
It’s a football weekend: The Redskins aren’t playing, but they did beat Super Bowl contender New York Giants twice. Twice! So should the Giants win, that’s a nice feather in Washington’s cap. Whichever team you’re rooting for, you’ll want to check our ideas for the best places to watch the big game. Of course, there are plenty of great events in the days leading up to the game, and we’ve got a list of those, too. Our favorites include performances by Step Afrika!, a film series dedicated to female directors and dubstep trailblazers Skream & Benga.

Washington is home to many important artifacts tied to Black History Month. Local dance group Step Afrika! pays tribute to this month with performances including “Wade,” an homage to the church and the beauty of spiritual song.

In conjunction with a new exhibit about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, Artisphere kicks off a film series dedicated to the work of female directors. This Friday is “The Piano” by Jane Campion. Look for “Marie Antoinette,” “Monster” and “Frida” in the weeks to come.

Dubstep is the genre of electronic music du jour: So many DJs are dropping “dubstep” remixes with the genre’s signature womping bass. London-based DJs Skream and Benga were perfecting the style well before Skrillex became well known. See them perform at U Street Music Hall.

Those are just a few of our picks; see our full list of a dozen ideas for the can’t-miss events this weekend.
