The summer solstice arrives today at 7:09 p.m. and it’s not being subtle about it: the longest day of the year has announced itself like a fire-breathing dragon. If you aren’t planning on spending the solstice hiding from Apollo in an ultra-air-conditioned ice box, why not check out some of the events around town?

If you need a quick cool-down, you can find it at area Caribou Coffee and Rita’s locations. The former is offering $2 iced drinks at participating locations, while the custard and ice purveyor is serving up regular-size ices for $2 all day.

The rest of the celebrations begin at noon when area McCormick and Schmick’s kick off the Longest Happy Hour of the Year. The specials, including $3.95 cheeseburgers, $4.95 select beers and $5.95 wine, last until 10 p.m. in the bar and — if can you handle it — outside on the patio.

Tonight, Hillyer Art Space gets in on the action with a solstice party surrounding its current exhibition of 80 artists who have shown their work at the Dupont Circle gallery over the last six years.Visitors can also check out live music and fill up on Flying Dog brews and barbecue courtesy of the BBQ Bus.

If you prefer to celebrate the advent of summer by giving back, tomorrow’s celebration at Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center and Park might be your thing. The Arlington spot hosts a day of clean-ups. And don’t worry, there will be refreshments.

Events continue through the weekend starting in Baltimore with a fundraiser at the Maryland Science Center. The nighttime party features live soul, dancing, food and beverages.

For the benders and stretchers, Flow Yoga hosts renowned yogini Shiva Rea at All Souls Church for the Summer Solstice Regeneration Weekend. What does summertime regeneration entail? In this case, a couple days of workshops capped off by a yoga dance party on Sunday night.
