Sign up for a zombie race

Full speed ahead: If you don’t start training, you could end up undead. (Photo by Astrid Riecken For The Washington Post)
Just when it seems like zombies have infiltrated every corner of our day-to-day lives, from TV night to emergency preparedness and movie going to higher education and reading — even infesting Jane Austen’s most beloved classic (the horror!) — here they come, limping with arms outstretched, into sports and recreation.

On Oct. 22, the undead are headed to Darlington, Md., about an hour and 45 minutes north of Washington, to give runners a reason to pick up the pace during a 5k obstacle course race. Racers get a flag football-style belt, and if the zombies manage to steal your flags, you join the undead. If you become zombified, you can still continue to the finish line, but you can’t qualify for awards. But there is the potential for a twist ending: Hidden objects along the course include zombie kryptonite.

Despite the relatively hefty admission price of $77, the event is filling up fast and registration continues only until Saturday, Oct. 1, so if you happen to love zombies — and running — you better act fast.
