Taste Test: Before Astro Doughnuts pops up at Chinatown Coffee, we break down the flavors

On Thursday and Friday, Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken will host a pop-up at Chinatown Coffee and give the sugar-starved masses a taste of more than a dozen doughnut flavors before its actual shop opens at 1308 G St. NW in January.

Till then, check out D.C.’s best doughnuts.

Before the pop-up, Justin Rude and I ate our way through a dozen doughnuts — cue the violins — so we could offer up our takes, with photos, in the slideshow above.

Overall impressions? We found the square-shaped filled doughnuts generously packed with cream, or, in the case of the peanut butter and jelly doughnut, strawberry jam. And while we’re used to cake doughnuts being a little hearty, Astro’s surprised us with their lightness. The yeast doughnuts also were airy, but their glazes were subtle.

The doughnuts will be $2.25 to $2.85 each and offered at Chinatown Coffee beginning at 8 a.m. both days. Find the menu for the pop-up below.

Doughnut varieties available for sale each day include:

Vanilla glazed

Brooklyn Blackout

Maple bacon

Peanut butter & jJelly

Crème brûlée

Eggnog cake doughnut

Panettone doughnut

Thursday

Banana nut

Gingerbread

Grapefruit

Black & White

Gianduia

Friday

Twink-nut

Chocolate glazed

Pecan

Mocha

Oatmeal raisin
