For a shop far from the bustle of downtown offices, The Coffee Bar was hopping this morning at 9 a.m. The city’s newest independent java house opened on Monday on a quiet residential corner opposite Garrison Elementary at 12th and S Streets NW, staking its claim as the neighborhood’s destination for a caffeine fix with a side of sweet treats.
Owner Cait Lowry was behind the bar this morning, serving up croissants and muffins from local pastry maker Hawthorne and caffeinated beverages from one of TCB’s three suppliers — Ceremony, Handsome Coffee Roasters and Batdorf & Bronson.
Foot traffic is minimal on this stretch near the 14th and U Street corridors, which contributes to the low-key vibe that’s more neighborhood hangout than buzzy destination. The spare but charming shabby chic interior mixes reclaimed pieces — an old window separates the pastries from customers, with items and pricing scrawled across the panes — and comfy seating, including a tufted armchair just begging customers to relax and stay a while
