Over the weekend, the much anticipated film “The Hunger Games” knocked one out of the multiplex, grossing a grand total of $155 million and breaking the box office record for a debut of a non-sequel. It comes in third place for opening weekends overall, just behind last year’s “Harry Potter” finale and “The Dark Knight.”
The movie, an adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s popular novel, stars Jennifer Lawrence as the female lead, Katniss Everdeen. In contrast to films such as “Twilight,” however, the Associated Press reports that gender was more balanced among weekend “Hunger Games” viewers, suggesting some serious longevity in the franchise.
Here are the weekend’s top 10 movies at the box office:
1. “The Hunger Games,” $155 million
2. “21 Jump Street,” $21.3 million
3. “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” $13.1 million
4. “John Carter,” $5 million
5. “Act of Valor,” $2.1 million
6. “Project X,” $2 million
7. “A Thousand Words,” $1.9 million
8. “October Baby,” $1.7 million
9. “Safe House,” $1.4 million
