“The Possession,” the new Jewish variant on “The Exorcist,” was the top-grossing film at the box office over Labor Day weekend. Critic Mark Jenkins gave the movie two and a half stars, calling it a “cleverly constructed, well-paced piece of hokum.” The film made $17.7 million in its opening weekend.

The Prohibition-era drama “Lawless” trailed far behind in the No. 2 slot, with $9.7 million. In all, the holiday weekend was a quiet one at moviehouses nationwide (more on Hollywood’s slow summer here). Here are the weekend’s top ten movies at the box office:

1. “The Possession,” $17.7 million

2. “Lawless,” $9.7 million

3. “The Expendables 2,” $8.8 million

4. “The Bourne Legacy,” $7.2 million

5. “ParaNorman,” $6.6 million

6. “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” $6.1 million

7. “The Dark Knight Rises,” $5.9 million

8. “The Campaign,” $5.4 million

9. “2016: Obama’s America,” $5.1 million

10. “Hope Springs,” $4.7 million
