‘The Watch,’ ‘Ruby Sparks’ and more new movies

In this week’s new movies, “The Watch” is untimely but funny and “Ruby Sparks” is pleasantly cerebral. Here’s what the Post critics had to say about the new releases:


The Watch” (R) “With Colorado and the rest of the country still reeling, some viewers might not find ‘The Watch’s’ blithe shoot-em-ups as much fun as they might have a few weeks ago. Then again, the premise of the movie is so goofy, the performances so winningly wacky, that a willing — indeed eager — suspension of disbelief has rarely been easier.” — Ann Hornaday


Step Up Revolution” (PG-13) “Despite its title, audiences shouldn’t expect anything revolutionary from the fourth chapter in the ‘Step Up’ franchise. ‘Step Up: Familiar Ground’ or ‘Step Up: You’ve Seen All This Before’ would be more accurate, but Summit Entertainment’s marketing department knows that wouldn’t help sell tickets.” — Sean O’Connell


Ruby Sparks” (R) “If ‘Ruby Sparks’ ultimately loses its nerve, perhaps that’s [Zoe] Kazan’s sop to audiences she thinks won’t be interested in dealing with the tougher implications of what they’ve just seen. Because for a while there, ‘Ruby Sparks’ is a tough little movie.” — Ann Hornaday


The Queen of Versailles” (Unrated) “It would be so easy to demonize Jackie Siegel, but by the end of the film, with the animals dying, her house descending into unkempt chaos and her marriage fraying, viewers can’t help but feel confounded ­sympathy for a woman who so willingly bought into the American Dream at its most perversely distorted.” — Ann Hornaday


Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry” (Unrated) “Documentarian Alison Klayman’s prismatic portrait of the artist, ‘Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry,’ is a useful primer, though it also focuses a bit more on the activism than on the art. That’s probably because, for its subject, the line between the two is so indistinct.” — Michael O’Sullivan


Sacrifice” (R) “With its widescreen compositions and flame-illuminated interiors, ‘Sacrifice’ is visually entrancing. Yet the movie is not just an exercise in style. The deep shadows and flickering lights befit a tale of profound secrets and shifting alliances.” — Mark Jenkins


Farewell, My Queen” (R) “The foreboding and chaos contrast neatly with the lavish costumes and sets. Versailles takes on the feel of a gilded fortress, behind which the serving class hopes to hide. But money can’t buy everything, including, in this case, security.” — Stephanie Merry


The Well-Digger’s Daughter” (Unrated) “A remake of a 1940 film by French novelist and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, ‘The Well-Digger’s Daughter’ feels decidedly, almost defiantly, old-fashioned, but not necessarily in a bad way.” — Michael O’Sullivan
