Weekend Update: The Fillmore’s opening act

(Tim Tadder - Corbis)
Those sounds you hear coming from downtown Silver Spring? It’s the brand new Fillmore Silver Spring, the area’s newest music venue. The 2,000 capacity hall that claims San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium as its progenitor, welcomed Mary J. Blige to the stage on Thursday night, and after headliners John Legend and hip-hop duo Blackstar perform at the club this Saturday and Sunday, the lineup includes plenty for fans young (Deadmau5) and more seasoned (Blondie; Levon Helm) alike. In today’s Weekend section, David Malitz looks at the Fillmore and the rest of the area’s best music venues.

Also in today’s Weekend section:

•Album reviews of bands you can check out this week: Neon Indian (Tonight at the Rock and Roll Hotel); Blondie (Tuesday at the Fillmore); AM & Shawn Lee (Wednesday at the Black Cat); Rahsaan Patterson (Saturday at the Birchmere); and Serengeti (Thursday at the State Theatre).

•Looking to enjoy Recess on a school night? The club hosts the Rock Creek Social Club’s Good Life Parties every week, where the genre-skipping soundtrack sounds like it comes from the world’s most perfectly programmed iPod Shuffle.

•For lunch in Falls Church, don’t overlook strip mall standby Haandi Fine Indian Cuisine.

Michael O’Sulilvan investigates the pu pu platter of new art offerings on display at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center.

•The Kennedy Center returns to China for the first time since 2005.

•New at the movies: Ryan Gosling helps “Drive”to a four star review.
