Where to find unique holiday gifts

The annual Downtown Holiday Market, which fills F Street in front of the National Portrait Gallery, features dozens of merchants selling jewelry, art and clothing. (Courtesy of Diverse Markets Management)
Don’t look now, but the holidays are just around the corner. You haven’t even thought about the Thanksgiving feast, but it’s already time to start thinking about gifts for your mom, your spouse or your best friend. If you want to get them a gift that’s as cool and unique as they are, forget about the mall or last-minute online shopping and take advantage of the many seasonal markets and bazaars that spring up at this time of year. (We’ve compiled our favorites into one handy list.)

This Saturday, for example, you can browse Swedish Christmas ornaments or linens at the Drott

Lodge Swedish Bazaar in Potomac — and tuck into meatballs at the tasty smorgasbord while you’re at it. Next week, there’s a rare chance to check out the Embassy of the Czech Republic while shopping for holiday ornaments, crystal and other Czech-made gifts at the Czech Christmas Market. (They’ll even throw in samples of pastries and mulled wine for the full experience.) The only caveat is that, for security reasons, you need to sign up in advance for admission.

Coming weeks will bring the annual Museum Shop Around at Strathmore, which brings together the best of the area’s museum gift shops, a Christmas market run by the German armed forces and, for the art-lover in your life, the Cheap Art Sale.
