New York Magazine’s list of 101 Awesome Pies (and Slices) is pizza porn, plain and simple. Even so, it’s particularly well executed: Sumptuous pies in myriad styles from across the country: thin crust, Neapolitan, New York style, Sicilian, deep dish. Even frozen pizzas get their due. (Important: Trader Joe’s > Anyone.)
I was raised on Armand’s, so I’m biased here, but I think it’s among the D.C. area’s best pizzas. I crave it. Even so, I’ll freely recognize it’s not a true doppelganger for the Windy City’s finest deep dish. It has a different crust, and the sauce isn’t the chunky marinara that usually sits atop a Chicago pie’s cheese. But it’s a D.C. original, somewhere on the same deep dish continuum as a St. Louis-style pizza (see District of Pi), which uses a deep cornmeal crust. The flagship Tenleytown Armand’s closed in June, but locations in Capitol Hill, Silver Spring, Rockville, Gaithersburg and Olney remain.
