A taste of Laos at Toki Underground

Depending on whether or not you know your way around a plate of nam khao, Toki Underground's Laotian tasting menu on Sunday could be a familiar flavor, or an education. The H Street NE ramen joint is bringing in chef Seng Luangrath of Bangkok Golden Seven Corners to prepare a seven course Laotian tasting menu on Sunday, March 3.

Reservations are required, and you can call 202-388-3086 to get a spot at the table. The set menu (no substitutions -- sorry vegetarians and allergy sufferers) is $50, and seating times begin at 5 p.m. What can Laotian newbies expect? Here's the menu:

Nam Khao: A salad of fried crispy rice balls, coconut, peanuts, and other ingredients.

Sai Oua: Laotian sausage seasoned with lemongrass and cilantro, among other flavors.

Tum Marg Huong: Papaya salad with tomato and lime.

Laab Ped: Spiced duck.

Orm Pah: Curried fish stew.

Som Pah: Pickled fish.

Bua Loy: Sweetened rice balls in coconut milk.
