Alamo Drafthouse Cinema edges closer to D.C.

It's not quite downtown yet, but the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will edge closer to D.C. when the boutique chain of tavern-style movie theaters opens its newest location in Ashburn on May 3.

Located at the intersection of Route 7 and the Loudoun County Parkway in a new, mixed-use development called One Loudoun, the eight-screen venue will be the 13th outpost of the Austin-based company, which is known as much for its fusion of film, craft beer and food as it is for its principled stance against cellphone use during movies.

Alamo famously promotes this angry (and profanity-laced) voicemail message left by a customer who was kicked out for using her phone as a flashlight. The hilarious clip, which contains language unsuitable for a family publication, was produced by Alamo as a pre-show PSA for customers. As a result, Anderson Cooper called the company's CEO a "great American hero." I concur.

Prospective patrons can get a sneak peak by stopping by during the theater's staff training days, from April 29 to May 1, for discounted screenings of such recent films as "Zero Dark Thirty" and classic comedies like "Ghostbusters." As the new servers, bartenders and cooks learn the ropes, moviegoers will enjoy $2 screenings and half-price menu items, excluding alcohol. The menu, which will be similar to that of the chain's Winchester branch, includes pizza, burgers, wraps, salads and milkshakes.

And if Ashburn is still just too far away, franchise owners Anthony Coco and Joseph Edwards said movie lovers can expect to see a few more Alamo branches in this area (and a lot closer to D.C.) within the next few years.

Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Michael O’Sullivan has worked since 1993 at The Washington Post, where he covers art, film and other forms of popular — and unpopular — culture.
