District Taco now open and serving breakfast tacos on Capitol Hill

Finally, Eastern Market has a place for breakfast tacos. District Taco, one of our favorite purveyors of tacos and burritos, opened this morning in the former Yes! Organic Market space on Pennsylvania Avenue near Seventh Street SE. It's a huge, airy space: The 70 seats are a mix of tables and a row of stools facing the street through large plate-glass windows.

If you haven't visited the Metro Center or Arlington locations, you pick a burrito ($7) or taco (three for ($7), then one of six proteins, including carne asada and pork al pastor. Top your creation with any of 12 basic toppings for free, or guacamole, chorizo or bacon for an extra charge. Breakfast items are served all day, and can also be fully customized. The salsa bar has a range of house-made sauces to try. Pro tip: If you pick a taco, always get the corn tortillas.

Keep an eye out for the "Yucutan Spicy" menu items: Owner Osiris Hoil grew up there, and these dishes add an extra kick of spice. The thin, salty chips are great with guacamole, and the "regular" size ($5.50) is more than enough to share.

The Metro Center location is known for its long lunchtime lines, so time-pressed Hill staffers should take advantage of the restaurant's order-ahead service, which allows you to schedule a pickup time. District Taco will even split the bill for you.

While the restaurant will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, it's surprising that it won't open until 10 a.m. on the weekend. One would think breakfast tacos would prove popular with crowds heading to Eastern Market and the flea market. I bet District Taco will figure that out eventually.
