Olive oil cake custard for a cause at Shake Shack

On the heels of today's Weekend ice cream cover story and -- finally! -- the first 80-degree day in May, here's another option for cool refreshment: Shake Shack's special May flavors, as part of a fundraiser for Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign.

The most surprisingly good (to me) of the seven new, baked goods-themed flavors? Olive oil cake, the flavor of the day each Thursday. With hints of citrus, vanilla and just a touch of the pungency of olive oil, this is a grown-up custard flavor, especially compared to its competitors, which include lemon meringue (Monday), black-and-white cookie (Tuesday), oatmeal cream pie (Wednesday), chocolate chip cookie (Friday) and banana bread (Sunday). Another flavor falling firmly in the big-kid category: A spiced chocolate brownie custard (Saturday) that is actually quite spicy.

Any Shake Shack customers who donate $2 or more to No Kid Hungry throughout the month of May -- with 100 percent of those donations going toward the anti-childhood hunger charity -- will get a card for a free shake redeemable upon their next visit.
