The D.C. area’s free summer concerts, from Herndon to Rockville

Summer in the District is boom time for daters. There are outdoor movies, rooftop bars, dance parties on boats and, for those earning an intern's wage, free concerts on seemingly every square inch of grass from Herndon to Rockville.

Jazz in the Garden and Hill Country's Backyard Barbecue are just a few places you can sprawl out, snack on a picnic and listen to music. But there are many more ideas, some that are perfect for couples and 20-somethings, others ideal for families. Here are more than 15 places you can find a free concert this summer:

The District

Friday Night Concert Series: Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., through Aug. 30 at The Yards Park, Third and Water streets SE. www.yardspark.org.

Jazz in the Garden: Fridays from 5 to 8:30 p.m., through Aug. 30. National Gallery of Art, 600 Constitution Ave. NW. www.nga.gov/programs/jazz.

Sunsets With a Soundtrack:  The U.S. Army Concert Band performs most Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m., through Aug. 30 at the U.S. Capitol, west steps, Pennsylvania Avenue and First Street NW. www.usarmyband.com.

Canal Park Lunchtime concerts: Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., through July 31 at Canal Park, Second and M streets SE. www.capitolriverfront.org.
