Intern-friendly activities better than Netflix in your room

July 11, 2013

Summer internships in Washington mean big dreams and small budgets for the thousands of 20-somethings who descend on the city each year. It’s impossible to sample everything the D.C. area has to offer in eight to 12 weeks, but we’re here to help. From our interns at The Washington Post to the interns of D.C., here’s a list of activities that shouldn't be missed.

Drink a bottle (without shrinking) at MadHatterDown the rabbit hole you go at this Dupont Circle establishment, with happy hour specials so good, you’ll think you’re actually in Wonderland. Deals include half-price bottles of wine on Monday, half-price drafts on Tuesday and $1 Bud Lights on Thursday. For interns under 21, the weekend brunch is yummy too. (Nicole Chavez, development and transportation reporting intern.)

Go Greek: Who thought you could get such good Greek food in Washington? Forget Astoria: This is the place to be for Greek cuisine that is true to its roots and yet stays modern, light and relevant! Kellari is an upscale fish tavern downtown that knows how to serve seafood and can bring Greek zest to any business lunch. Cava Mezze offers a modern take on traditional Greek dishes, features some great wines and has a lively neighborhood vibe. Even the trendy Barcode has some noteworthy Greek dishes – the grilled squid is an absolute must. All that’s missing is the sea. (Katerina Sokou, financial reporting intern from Greece.)

Mini-golf at the National Building Museum: Snake your ball through mini architectural wonders full of big surprises. Walk past the Great Hall's floor-to-ceiling columns after your round for the most marvelous victory lap of your life. (Rebecca Rolfe, interactive graphics intern.)

Enjoy the waterfront: Take the Metro to Waterfront station and check out the Maine Avenue Fish Market, then walk alongside the water to choose a picnic spot, or grab a stool at Cantina Marina’s festive patio. (Casey Capachi, video intern.)

Play, drink and win at trivia: Prove to your professors that you haven’t forgotten everything by participating in a trivia night at a local bar. It’s the perfect way to make quick friends and enjoy a night out. It’s also a great first date, so go ahead and ask that cute intern who you keep running into at Starbucks. (Recommendation from Julie Zauzmer, metro reporting intern.)

Live dangerously: Stop looking at study abroad pictures from your best friend’s roommate’s cousin on Facebook and find a temporary cure for wanderlust at Gravelly Point Park in Virginia. Located just north of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, you’ll have a close enough view of planes taking off (or, if you're lucky, landing) to make any picnic dramatic. (Recommendation from Stefanie Dazio, metro reporting intern.)

Get your feet wet: Kick off the weekend (and your shoes) while tapping your toes to Jazz in the Garden, every Friday during the summer at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. The long line is for the sangria, and yes, it’s worth it. (Recommendation from Catherine Harrington, Wapo Labs social intern.)
