The corpse flower is in bloom

See, Titan Arum? This is what happens when you make people wait. Because while some of us were glued to the U.S. Botanic Garden's webcam last week waiting for your flowers to open, the rest of the world kept right on moving. You finally opened and now you're a distant second on Monday's list of anticipated arrivals. Timing is everything.

Judging by the crowds swarming around you at this very moment, however, plenty of Washington still wants to catch a whiff of your horrendous odor, which has been described as "rotting flesh" and "like a very dead elephant." Garden officials predict the corpse flower's scent will be at its worst this morning.

If you go: The U.S. Botanic Garden will be open until 8 p.m. on Monday. 100 Maryland Ave. SW (Metro: Federal Center). 202-225-8333. www.usbg.gov.
