The second edition of El Centro, the tacos-and-tequila joint on 14th Street NW, will be opening Friday in the former Third Edition space in Georgetown.
The new restaurant is approximately 1,500 square feet larger than the original, and it emulates its sister restaurant in menu and decor. Partner Ivan Iricanin says the menu will feature all of the best-sellers from the first restaurant, but 40 percent of the dishes will be new, including new tacos (octopus!) and enchiladas, as well as iron skillet fajitas. The bar will be making its own tequila infusions in combinations like strawberry chili, pineapple Serrano pepper, fresh papaya and watermelon-cucumber. And to wind down the last days of summer, they're testing out some recipes for boozy mezcal popsicles that are likely to be on the opening menu.
Fans of Third Edition will find the space transformed. One quirk discovered during the building's renovation was a hidden mural. It depicts a Colonial-era street scene, but doesn't appear to be of D.C. as the lighthouse and mountains in the background would indicate; it's also covered in graffiti. Even though it has nothing to do with Mexico, publicist Lindley Thornburg said the restaurant's team thought it was so mysterious and interesting, they couldn't bring themselves to get rid of it.
