Smashburger is about to become the latest national burger joint to plant its flag in D.C. The Denver-based chain, which has a location in Fairfax, will open at 1739 Connecticut Ave. NW on Wednesday, north of Dupont Circle.

Smashburger's menu includes the Capital Burger, topped with onions, Swiss, arugula and bacon. It's also available as a chicken sandwich, along with more than a half-dozen signature burgers, Haagen-Dazs shakes, fries and flash-fried carrots and green beans known as "veggie frites."

Smashburger's verb+food nomenclature works no matter the cuisine you're hungry for. Possible ideas for Smashburger founder Tom Ryan's next fast-casual food operation: Crushtaco. Hammerschnitzel. Shattercue. Pummelchicken. Clobberito. Manglewich.

Would a Hammerschnitzel be delicious? I'd certainly like to find out. Then again, Ryan's bio identifies him as the creator of Pizza Hut's stuffed-crust pizza and the McDonald's Dollar Menu, so he doesn't need help coming up with marketing gold. In fact, he needs some kind of lifetime achievement award.

Smashburger, 1739 Connecticut Ave. NW. Opens Wednesday, Sept. 11.
