15 very different ways to spend Halloween night

Many bars hosted their Halloween parties last weekend, but there's still plenty of fun to be had on All Hallows' Eve. Here are some of the top destinations for Thursday night.

Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club
Doc Scantlin and His Imperial Palms Orchestra are the area's top performers of music from the "Great Gatsby" era, and their Halloween party is inspired by Fritz Lang's 1927 masterpiece, "Metropolis." The big band also will perform racy numbers from 1920s Hollywood films, beginning at 8 p.m.

The Black Cat
The Black Cat will have three parties under one roof on Halloween. In the Red Room, bartenders from Bar TNT and the Rappahannock Oyster Bar will mix spooky cocktails while DJs spin metal. On the Back Stage, a Misfits cover band (with members of Rattler and Warchild) will perform. Upstairs, the Halloween Circus will feature rockabilly bands, burlesque and sideshow acts. There's a $5 cover charge downstairs, while admission to the upstairs costs $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Clarendon Grill
The Halloween Monster Bash starts at 5:30 p.m. with happy hour DJ Pat Premier. Pennsylvania cover band Total Whiteout takes the stage at 9:30 p.m. and Clarendon Grill regular 2Nutz plays party music during band breaks. The costume contest offers $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third. Early arrivals will pay a $5 cover; it may rise later in the night.

Cobalt
Cobalt's Thursday night entertainment usually consists of men stripping down to their skivvies to win cash in a best body contest, but in honor of Halloween, they're switching a costume contest. Top prize is $750, with $150 for the runner-up and $100 for third place. There's a $5 cover charge after 9 p.m. Sasha J. Adams and Ba’Naka are the hosts, while DJs MadScience and Sean Morris provide the beats.

Dogfish Head Alehouse
Both the Fairfax and Falls Church branches of Dogfish Head Alehouse will have family-friendly parties on Halloween from 3 to 6 p.m. Bring the kids in for face-painting, trick-or-treating and a costume contest at 6 p.m. Afterward, there will be fun for adults, including tapping of vintage beers at 7 p.m. and a costume contest at 9 p.m. Matt Waller performs in Fairfax; a DJ spins from 9 to 11 p.m. in Falls Church. Look out for specials, including free koozies. (Sorry, Marylanders, but the Gaithersburg Alehouse is having its party on Wednesday night.)

Jimmy's Old Town Tavern
Get in a spooky mood at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern with Black Sabbath cover band Children of the Grave, which will perform all the Ozzy Osbourne-era hits, beginning at 9 p.m. Admission is free.

Maryland Live! Casino
The Michael Jackson tribute band Who's Bad, which has sold out the 9:30 Club on several occasions, will headline the Maryland Live Halloween festivities, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Beyond the inevitable dance-off to "Thriller," there will be contests for the scariest, sexiest and most creative costumes, with winners receiving $500 to $2,000 in slot machine tokens.

The Park at 14th
The Park at 14th is hosting Halloween parties Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, and the club is starting off with a bang: Drake will be the special guest host after his Verizon Center concert. If you ever wanted to dress up as a character from "Degrassi: The Next Generation," this is your chance. Doors open for happy hour at 5 p.m., and admission is free if you're stopping by for drinks and dinner; guarantee your spot by calling for a reservation. The official party for Drake starts at 10, though the man himself won't be by until his concert finishes. Admission is $50, and you can skip the line by buying a ticket in advance.

Port City Brewing Company
The Alexandria brewery is opening its tasting room for a special Halloween-themed night of trivia, beginning at 7 p.m. There will also be a costume contest, along with a chance to try Port City's award-winning beer.

Rock and Roll Hotel
The entire Rock and Roll Hotel welcomes the Brodown Throwdown, with seven DJs, including Lxsx Frxnk and Chris Nitti, spread across the upper floor and rooftop deck with no cover charge. The Queens of Noise, Accidents and Burn the Ballroom take over the main stage at 7:30 p.m. with a $5 cover.

Rustico
Face it: Halloween really is your last chance to drink pumpkin beers. With this in mind, Rustico will be putting 26 pumpkin ales on tap at its Ballston location. All will be available in four-ounce tasters if you want to sample a variety. We recommend Weyerbacher, Schalfly, Devils Backbone and Dogfish Head.

Sphinx Club
Costumes are required at the Haunted Hunt party, which features live music from White Ford Bronco and Sick Feed, plus DJ Esso. It's organized by Georgetown Events, the promoters behind Truckeroo, the Bayou and Smith Point. There are two types of tickets: The $20 option includes admission and a cash bar, while the $69 VIP level offers an open bar from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Whichever way you go, buy tickets in advance to avoid price hikes at the door.

Tropicalia
The corner of 14th and U St. is bound to be a wild gauntlet of frantic partiers who didn't get all of their Halloween madness out of their systems last Saturday. But if you're feeling festive and want to brave the fray without getting overrun by it, dip downstairs into Tropicalia for a eclectic combo of live music at the Psychedelic Brazilian & Gypsy Brass Halloween. Alma Tropicalia is known for jazz and bossa nova, but will be dipping into their repertoire of Brazilian psych rock classics tonight. Black Masala covers everything from Baltic beats to New Orleans brass. You'll pay $10 to get in.

Town Danceboutique
The Mixtape DJs play everything from Lady Gaga to Missy Elliott to Robyn, with the occasional Dolly Parton and Spice Girls thrown in for good measure. The annual Halloween party at Town will feature a midnight costume contest with a $300 prize.

U Street Music Hall Presents: U-Hell
Beyond a great lineup of moombahton and club DJs – headlined by Gents and Jawns – this 18-and-over night offers a year of free admission to every single U Street Music Hall event as a grand prize in the costume contest. To top it off, it's the release party for Ghoul's Night Out, a new Belgian-style quadruple from DC Brau.
