One-time couple Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion are the heart of Cults, the indie-rock-meets-'60s-soul act that was one of the most buzz-garnering bands of last year (they sold out their last two D.C. shows). Though they called it quits on their love affair, the pair have doubled-down on Cults, returning with a new album on Columbia Records, "Static," and a tour that brings them back to the Black Cat tonight.
In his review of the album this week, critic Christopher Kompanek calls out the band's heavier sound, writing: "The tension between punk and pop impulses imbues the songs with an intriguing energy that may give birth to a new genre: sway-gazing."
