Tonight’s must-see show: Sky Ferreira at the 9:30 club

November 18, 2013

She’s only 21, but Sky Ferreira has been churning in the music-industry machine for half a decade, a problem child for major-label minders who weren’t sure what to do with the socially awkward rock singer with the model good looks.

Add epic delays of her debut album, a drug arrest and the cancellation of a high-profile opening slot for Vampire Weekend and it was easy to begin to lose faith that the singer would amount to much. But then Ferreira turned out a promising performance at this fall's Virgin Mobile FreeFest, displaying her knack for penning teenaged songs of woe with a rock-and-roll sensibility.

Night Time, My Time,” her debut album, was finally released late last month. It serves only to cement the idea that Ferreira could stick around. A collection of grungy ditties, it's a surprisingly solid showing, a fun ride even if its songs do add up to a handful of disparate thoughts rather than a masterpiece of an album.  If you're a fan of Best Coast, Chvrches, Garbage and similar acts, you might want to grab tickets for Ferreira's 9:30 Club show with the Smith Westerns tonight. Check out our profile and review, then get ready for the show with some of Ferreira's top tracks.
