How to spend New Year’s Eve 2013 in the D.C. area

Don't look now, but New Year's Eve is less than a month away. If you haven't made plans yet, there's still time: Most of the area's biggest clubs and concert halls still have tickets remaining, but you'll have to move fast to secure your reservations.

We've tried to list as many of the area' large venues as possible, though some (*cough* Howard Theatre, DC9, *cough*) are procrastinating with their plans. We'll add those venues when we have details. Stay tuned for a separate list of smaller bars and clubs, including those offering free or low-cost admission.

9:30 Club
How do you improve on a party starring Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue's rip-roaring mix of funk and Crescent City brass? Add Washington's own go-go trailblazers Trouble Funk to the bill. All tickets include a champagne toast at midnight.

Bethesda Jazz and Blues Supper Club
Harold Melvin died in 1997, but former members of his vocal group continue to tour and keep his memory alive. Harold Melvin's Blue Notes perform at this Bethesda venue's first New Year's Eve party, which features a four-course dinner, wine, drinks, a champagne toast, party hats and noise makers.

The Birchmere
Bluegrass pioneers the Seldom Scene return for their annual New Year's engagement at the Birchmere, joined by the Stray Birds and Donna Ulisse.

Black Cat
One of the city's longest-running New Year's Eve traditions features Peaches O'Dell and Her Orchestra swinging their way through everything from "Sing, Sing, Sing" to numbers from Fred Astaire musicals. On the back stage, DJ Dredd and Grap Luva provide hip-hop and funk classics.

Blues Alley
Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander performs two shows on New Year's Eve, both of which include three-course meals, non-alcoholic drinks and noisemakers. The 8 p.m. concert costs $100; the 10 p.m. performance costs $150 and includes champagne by the glass.

The Carlyle Club
Irrepressible 1920s bandleader Doc Scantlin leads his Imperial Palms Orchestra through the biggest hits of Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and popular musical numbers. Tickets include a five-course meal and champagne. Black tie is suggested.

Echostage
Swedish DJ Eric Prydz remains one of the biggest house and techno producers in the world, thanks to his work under numerous aliases, including Pryda and Cirez D. Matt Goldman opens the night at D.C.'s largest dance club.

The Fillmore
Reggae-punk-funk veterans (and one-time Sublime protégés) Slightly Stoopid and Passafire ring in the New Year in Silver Spring.

The Hamilton
Here's an interesting pairing: New Orleans R&B legend Dr. John shares the Hamilton's stage with sassy 1950s rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson. Tickets include a gumbo dinner and midnight champagne toast.

Iota
Local alt-country favorites the Beanstalk Library team up with Derek Evry & His Band of Misanthropes and These Future Saints at the cozy Clarendon club. Tickets are available for in-person purchase at Iota.

Jammin Java
Bring the kids to the annual Rocknoceros New Year's Eve parties at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. ($10 each), then come back for the adults-only Good Vibes New Year's Eve. It's headlined by local group Melodime, whose Southern music ranges from Dave Matthews to Memphis blues. Tickets include a midnight champagne toast.

Rams Head Live
Keller Williams is bringing two bands to Baltimore for New Year's Eve: Keller and the Keels finds him putting a newgrass spin on songs by Amy Winehouse and the Butthole Surfers, while More Than a Little is a vehicle for jamming on funky originals and covers.

Rams Head On Stage
Few pianists play the blues and boogie-woogie with the verve that Deanna Bogart brings to the instrument. Tickets for her annual engagement at Rams Head include a buffet dinner. Discount reservations are available at nearby hotels.

Rock and Roll Hotel
A strong lineup of local DJs, including Chris Nitti, Rex Riot, Phillip Goyette and Denman, takes over two floors of the club, while the rooftop deck features a "silent disco" where the crowd dons headphones to listen to a pair of DJs battle. Tickets include an all-night open bar.

The State Theatre
The Legwarmers -- the area's finest all-'80s cover act -– pay tribute to the B-52s, the Cure, Madonna, Prince, the Go-Gos, Robert Palmer, Kenny Loggins and dozens of other hairsprayed hitmakers. Legwarmers, muscle shirts and '80s-appropriate costumes are encouraged.

U Street Music Hall
Be prepared to spend your New Year's Eve waiting in line at U Street Music Hall: The ever-popular moombahton duo Nadastrom, Gents & Jawns and Jen Lasher are taking over the club, but there are no advance tickets. Show up early.
