Where to brunch on New Year’s Day

December 30, 2013

When you wake up on New Year's Day, your stream-of-consciousness could sound something like Doge: Wow. Such hangover. Much pain. Need eggs.

Keep this list of Wednesday's holiday brunch specials handy,  or take preventative measures by making a reservation.

• Agua 301, the newest addition to the Navy Yard, is debuting its new brunch menu on Jan. 1. Chef Antonio Burrell promises "brothy soups that will take care of hangovers."

• If you really just need to eat a sandwich and go back to bed, grab a carryout hangover picnic from G Sandwich: a ginger beer, kettle chips and a Jersey Mac ham, egg and cheese sandwich for $10.

• Vegans: There's a brunch for you too, at Sticky Fingers, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Sometimes, you just want cold pizza after a long night of drinking, and that's where Urbana's New Year's Day brunch comes in. Get a cold margherita pizza and a bloody mary for $10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or you can order off of the regular hot menu, too).

• At the Coupe in Columbia Heights, sample a special New Year's brunch dish: "Bubble and Squeak," a traditional British plate of corned beef, potato and Brussels sprouts for $12. Seems guaranteed to soak up the remaining booze in your system.

Pearl Dive's Jan. 1 hangover special: $10 for a Shiner Bock and a Dive Burger, a double-patty topped with bacon and pepper-jack.

• You'll find a bloody mary bar at Poste's New Year's Day brunch, beginning at 8 a.m. (Like you'll even be up that early, haha, riiiight.) And at 4 p.m. 12 p.m. they'll switch over to a pig roast, as pork is considered to be a lucky food to start the new year.

• Bottomless brunches with reservations still available: Agora, El Centro, Masa 14, Zengo, Boqueria and Ambar.

• Old favorites serving up brunch: Blue Duck Tavern, Domku, Georgia Brown's, Liberty Tavern, Lyon Hall and Shaw's Tavern.
