Friday-Sept. 7: To define cool, you might start by listing the names of those who've contributed to pop culture through their artistic influence or charisma: Frank Sinatra, right, Madonna, Miles Davis and Billie Holiday, to name a few. The National Portrait Gallery's new photography exhibition 'American Cool' explores the concept of cool through these icons, as captured by Carl Van Vechten, Annie Leibovitz, Cass Bird and other photographers who are very cool in their own right.

Friday: The Olympics Opening Ceremonies in Sochi are Friday, and there's perhaps no better place to watch them than at Russian restaurant Mari Vanna. The party starts Friday night with free vodka shots and free piroshkis, or Russian pierogies, from 6 to 9 p.m. in honor of the opening ceremonies. Food from the Sochi region — including khachapuri, a cheese-filled Georgian bread that resembles pizza, and shish kabob platters — will be featured through Feb. 23. Saturday: Pinstripes, a 14-lane bowling alley and restaurant, opens Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Shops at Georgetown Park. The D.C. location of a Midwestern chain, Pinstripes will also feature an outdoor patio and six bocce courts spread over 32,000 square feet on two cavernous levels. Read: Pinstripes, Georgetown’s bowling and bocce fortress, opens Saturday.

Saturday:  It's been an up-and-down season for the Capitals, who hover just outside the playoff picture with 24 games remaining. But five Caps  -- Team USA's John Carlson, Team Russia's Alex Ovechkin, Team Czech Republic's Martin Erat and Team Sweden's Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson -- will represent their countries in the ice hockey tournament in Sochi. Saturday's Capitals Vs. New Jersey Devils matchup marks the team's final game before the Olympic break; the Caps won't return to the ice in Washington until March 2. The puck drops at 8 p.m. Update: Marcus Johansson of the Washington Capitals was added to Sweden's Olympic roster on Feb. 7.

Saturday: Before showing affection meant typing I <3 u, there were paper valentines. Saturday, Tudor Place Historic House in Georgetown hosts Be My Valentine, a cute, family-friendly tour and day of crafting intended to    introduce children to vintage valentines, letting them draw inspiration from the mansion's collection. Best for age 5 and older. The event is set for 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Admission is $10.

Saturday-Sunday: As part of the re-creation of the Beatles' first U.S. concert at the Uline Arena on Tuesday, organizers will exhibit 19 images taken by D.C.-based photographer Mike Mitchell in 1964. Mike Mitchell's photos of the Beatles are on view Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  at the Uline Arena, 1146 Third St. NE. Admission those days is $5. The photos will also be on display Tuesday during the "Yesterday & Today" concert. The exhibit is included with admission that night. For details, visit beatlesyesterdayandtoday.com.

Saturday:  Most people probably don’t go to Rumors or the Sign of the Whale looking for the person with whom they want to spend the rest of their life. But if you go on Cupid’s Bar Crawl, which hits those bars and a dozen others around Dupont Circle, you might meet someone who’ll join you for a drink next Friday. Valentine’s-themed costumes are suggested for this day of debauchery, so use your imagination; you never know who you’ll wind up sipping $2 Yuenglings and $3 Finlandia cocktails next to at the Front Page. Admission is $15 when you register at cupidsbarcrawl.com, or $20 at the door.

Saturday: NURISH Food & Drink, the latest restaurant concept from Kera Carpenter of Petworth’s Domku, opens Saturday in Anacostia. The French-themed cafe is promising a menu packed with "terrines, verrines, cheese boards, charcuterie, whole grain salads and baguette sandwiches." The restaurant opens its doors at 1231 Good Hope Rd. SE on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Sunday: The world is mourning the acting great Philip Seymour Hoffman, and among his fans is  Rhino Bar bartender Nick Bernel. So, although Rhino Bar is a sports bar, Bernel plans to memorialize Hoffman with an 11 a.m. Philip Seymour Hoffman movie marathon that includes "Almost Famous," "The Big Lebowski," "Along Came Polly," "Charlie Wilson's War," "Doubt," "Capote" and "Twister."
