8 things to do in the D.C. area on the weekend of Feb. 28-March 2

February 27

The weekend’s best in nightlife, music and art. For even more, check out Nightlife Agenda.

It's not summer yet, but Garry Winogrand's "Coney Island, New York," might have you feeling like it is. (The Estate of Garry Winogrand, courtesy Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco)

Open Thursday: The Smithsonian's Asian Pacific American Center will open its more-than-five-years-in-the-making exhibition “Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation,” a show that traces the history and current activism and achievements of the community estimated to make up one out of every 100 Americans. The colorful free exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History will be displayed indefinitely before eventually touring to other museums.

Friday: Los Lobos has spanned four decades and earned multiple Grammy Awards, so it seems inconceivable that the group has only two mainstream hits: the title track and "Come On, Let's Go" from the 1987 soundtrack to "La Bamba." The Los Angeles band, which expertly fuses blues-rock and traditional Mexican music, brings its 40th-anniversary tour to Annapolis at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. at Rams Head on Stage. Tickets are $65.

Friday: It might be best night ever for hip-hop fans: The Howard Theatre hosts arguably one of rap's greatest emcees, Rakim, in a double bill with Brit bad boy Slick Rick. Following it up for the late show? None other than crate-digging musical autodidact ?uestlove, who takes over the decks at 11 p.m. for what's sure to be an amazing dance party. Tickets for the concert are $32.50-$37;  the DJ set is $17.50-$22.50.

Saturday: Brightest Young Things hosts its second Emerging Artists Super Sampler at the Howard, with a lineup of DMV acts from Baltimore rapper DDM to D.C. dance-pop throwbacks Coup Sauvage and the Snips. D.C., you'll see, turns out far more than just punk rock. The show will also weave in local comedy, with sets by Adam Friedland, Andrew Bucket, Haywood Turnipseed Jr. and more. Tickets are $18 in advance.

Saturday-Sunday: We love a good breakfast spot, and that's precisely what the latest Red Apron location promises to be with its beefed-up breakfast sammies known as tigelles. Tim Carman explored the tigelle, an Italian creation featuring lard and imprinted with a design not unlike a tile, before the opening of the location at 709 D St. NW; this is the first weekend you can savor one in a leisurely fashion, over a Sunday paper and with a Ceremony coffee to wash it down.  Read: Red Apron to open Wednesday with tigelles.

Saturday: Most people are just getting ready for Mardi Gras, but Brazil is in the middle of its raucous Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, which draws millions to block parties and street parades through March 4. This weekend, Carnival is an excuse to get together and dance to some great Brazilian music at Artishpere, where American-Brazilian ensemble Nation Beat fuses percolating Brazilian maracatu drums, call-and-response chants, bubbling New Orleans bass lines, funky guitar riffs and the soulful vocals of Fabiana Masili. For this show at Artisphere, Nation Beat will be paired with Alma Tropicalia, a local ensemble that celebrates the smooth Tropicalia sounds of the '60s and '70s, and DJ Neville C., who has made numerous vinyl-shopping trips to Brazil. Tickets are $15.

Sunday-June 8: Photographer Garry Winogrand was one of the great mid-20th-century American street photographers, chronicling the connections that unite us and the barriers (of sex, class, age and race) that keep us apart. At the time of his 1984 death, Winogrand had about 250,000 frames of film undeveloped and unedited. Some of those works will appear in this career retrospective of about 190 works selected to showcase Winogrand's keen, sometimes satirical, yet always compassionate eye. The free show at the National Gallery of Art opens Sunday. Read: Sneak peek at Garry Winogrand at the National Gallery.

Sunday: It's no secret the Oscars are best viewed while wearing a comfortable pair of pajamas. You can do that at home but it's unlikely that you have a two-story HD screen on which to watch this weekend's ceremony. That's where Snuggle With the Stars gains its advantage: Come in your comfortable finest and watch the awards ceremony from the U.S. Navy Memorial's Burke Theater. The ticket price ($25; $50 VIP) includes snacks, beer, wine and soft drinks. Looking for other Oscar-party options? Find them here.
