The Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival sounds just about perfect

You know the deal with music festivals: not-inexpensive tickets; long trips to Columbia or Bristow; no outside food or beverage allowed; parking lot gridlock when it's over. And yet we deal with it, because live music outdoors on a nice day is a tough thing to beat.

The April 26 Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival is refreshingly different. It's near RFK Stadium -- on an island near RFK Stadium -- and all it costs is a $10 suggested donation to Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region. You can walk, bike or take Metro -- and if you must drive, the parking is free. Your outside food and (non-alcoholic) beverages are welcome, so pack your picnic blanket; food trucks and beer vendors will be there to take care of everything else.

Oh, and the music lineup is pretty great too.

Thirty local musicians will perform across four stages: You'll hear bluegrass, folk, string bands, singer-songwriters and even bachata from 1 to 7:45 p.m. Admission to the festival begins at noon. Tickets purchased in advance come with a coupon for a free beer, or you can pay as you enter the festival.
