Symposium on performers and audience

Zeitgeist DC presents "The Performer/Audience Relationship: Politics, Intimacy, and the Barriers Between Private and Public," a day-long symposium on the relationship between stage performers and their audience. The event includes interactive presentations by Zurich-based performance collective MerciMax, Austria's God's Entertainment, dog & pony dc and Berlin's machina eX.

Lara Bello

Award-winning Spanish singer-songwriter and dancer Lara Bello performs her unique blend of flamenco, classical music, Arab dance, jazz, Buddhist chants and overtone singing at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage. Sponsored by the Embassy of Spain, this show is part of the city-wide European Month of Culture.

FORWARD Electronic Festival: Perspective

Celebrate "electronic creative culture" at the seventh FORWARD festival, a series of audiovisual performances by DJs and artists, book readings, workshops and more. This year's theme is "perspective" and begins at the Goethe-Institut with an opening celebration and an A/V showcase of several electronic artists. (Admission is free; the showcase is $10.) The FORWARD festival continues through Sunday with events at various D.C. locations.

Book talk

Fiesta Asia Street Fair

This annual street fair, which celebrates 20 Asian cultures, features 1,000 performers on five stages, interactive activities, a parade, food vendors, cooking and martial arts demonstrations, craft exhibits and a talent contest for kids. And if that isn't enough, there's also a huge street dance.

Film screening: 'Separate but Equal'

In honor of the 60th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education civil rights case, AFI is screening the Emmy-winning 1991 film "Separate but Equal," starring Sidney Poitier as Thurgood Marshall. The film will be introduced by its director and producer, AFI founding director George Stevens Jr. Bonus: The first 50 guests get a free DVD of the movie.
