9 things to do in the D.C. area on the weekend of May 16-18

May 15

The weekend’s best in nightlife, music and art. For even more, check out Nightlife Agenda.

Arts in Foggy Bottom opens Friday. (Dakota Fine)

Friday: Animal Collective's knob-turner-in-chief, Panda Bear (a.k.a. Noah Lennox), takes a dreamier approach in his solo work. He's more experimental, abandoning the grounded pop rhythms that have helped give Animal Collective such broad appeal. Instead, his own music floats across genres as diverse as Beach Boys-esque chillwave and eerie chamber music. His show at the 9:30 Club this week serves as a preview for new material from his forthcoming album, "Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper." Get tickets, priced at $25, here.

Friday-June 5:  After finding success staging "Cuchullain" and "Basra Boy," Keegan Theatre is mounting "A Midsummer Night's Riot," the latest one-man show by Irish playwright Rosemary Jenkinson, who has a way of capturing the angst of young Irish men. Ross, played by actor Josh Sticklin, aspires to be a professional golfer, but in a neighborhood where riots take place nightly, it means something else to have a killer swing. The opening performance is at 8 p.m. Tickets, $30, are available here.

Saturday: Every two years, more than a dozen weird and wonderful pieces of new sculpture find their way to the lawns, roofs and windows of Foggy Bottom's homes and businesses. The resulting sculpture exhibition, Arts in Foggy Bottom, is a treasure hunt for art fans. It officially opens Friday, but the best way to get to know precisely what you're looking at is to hit Saturday's tour, featuring the artists, who will be presenting their works and taking questions. The free tour is set for 4 p.m. and meets at the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and I Street NW.

Saturday: The second race of the Triple Crown comes to Baltimore this weekend, and if you're looking to cheer on favorite California Chrome without actually going to Pimlico, get dressed up in your "Southern Belle" or "Southern Gentleman" attire and head to the Brixton's rooftop deck, where the Preakness will be on multiple screens and gin cocktails and mint juleps will flow, beginning at 2 p.m.  If you're bound for Pimlico Race Course for the 139th running of the Preakness Stakes, you'll join a crowd of 100,000 taking part in the festivities, including singer Lorde. Saturday: Have you ever had lunch in a graveyard? Graveyard Grub, the first food truck festival at Historic Congressional Cemetery, may make for a pretty weird day-date. The event features a variety of dining options and free tours of the cemetery. Take an introductory walk at 11 a.m. or hit a Civil War-themed stroll at 1 p.m. The free, dog-friendly event is set for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will bring out such trucks as Big Cheese, DC Slices and Red Hook Lobster Pound. Learn more here.

Saturday: Three-year-old DC Brau is a brewery on the upswing, and it's getting ready for a major expansion that will increase its brewing capacity by 50 percent. The Northeast facility will be closed to the public for several weeks while six new tanks are installed, so if you want to see the original DC Brau facility -- or fill your growler -- be there for Saturday's final Growler Hours from noon to 4 p.m.

Saturday: Passport D.C. turns the spotlight on Asia for the ninth annual Fiesta Asia Street Fair, which celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Expect parades, street dances, five stages of entertainment, food, martial arts demonstrations and crafts from origami to fan-making, along with dozens of performances. The free celebration is set for 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. along Pennsylvania Avenue between Third and Sixth streets NW.

Saturday: If all you know of old-time mountain music is what you hear at East Coast nightclubs, you might be forgiven for thinking it's nothing but good-time party music. As a founder of the Old Crow Medicine Show, Willie Watson might have had a hand in that. But the singer has struck out on his own, and he's exploring the more traditional, darker side of the folk singer genre with his new material. Catch him live at Gypsy Sally's on Saturday; tickets are $12-$15Read: Old Crow Medicine Show's Willie Watson, reviving the music of the mountain.

Sunday: Comedy comes to the Kennedy Center with comedians Dan Soder, of Comedy Central's "The Half Hour," and Carson Gross. The event, which may feature language too adult for your little ones, will be in the Terrace Theater at 6 p.m.
