Due to the Corcoran's impending transformation, chef Todd Gray's popular Sunday vegan brunch will have a new home beginning July 20: Gray's Farragut West restaurant, Equinox. And once it makes the move, the brunch will be even better, Gray says. "We didn’t have a full kitchen at the Corcoran," the chef says. "It was amazing what we did on induction burners. It was a challenge that we stepped up, and made it work."
Now that the brunch will be moving to a restaurant with the proper equipment, Gray says he'll be taking the $30 buffet brunch to a new level. Some of the new summer dishes he anticipates include melon gazpacho, roasted fig and artichoke salad with arugula, smoked tomato tartlets, and a grilled asparagus and soba noodle salad with pistachio pesto. Guests at the new vegan brunch will also be able to take advantage of an expanded bar, with bing cherry mimosas, sweet garlic bloody marys and non-alcoholic craft sodas in flavors such as strawberry hibiscus. Reservations are recommended.
Todd Gray's Muse at the Corcoran opened three years ago. And as the Corcoran moves toward its October closing and renovations, the cafe may be among the museum's earliest casualties. Gray says Muse is slated to close on July 31, the date his contract with the museum ends -- though, there is a chance it could be extended through August. He remained positive about the controversial merger: "I’m sure GW is going to do it the right way. I’m sure it’s going to be fantastic," he said, adding, "We’re food people, we’re not museum operators."
As for the food service in the museum when it reopens under the leadership of the National Gallery of Art and the George Washington University, Gray isn't sure if Muse will return.
"There’s a possibility that we’ll be speaking with GW and we are hopefully going to get that conversation together," Gray says, "but we are not assuming we are going to be there."
