Something for the weekend: The beer garden at Denizens Brewing Co.

A Friday afternoon with temperatures in the 80s and low humidity? You have no excuse not be outside after work today. If you're looking for something different, you can try a brand-new beer in a brand-new Silver Spring beer garden.

Denizens Brewing Company opened at the corner of East West Highway and Georgia Avenue on Wednesday, and while the brewpub itself remains a work in progress, the outdoor bar and seating is fully operational. Rows of long tables and chairs, shaded by umbrellas, dominate the space. Planters and flower boxes arranged throughout the patio offer some color.

Denizens' first house-made beer is Southside Rye IPA, which has a nice hop and spice character, though I found the finish a little sticky and resiny. It costs $6.50 a pint and checks in at 7.2 percent ABV. An English-style ESB should be tapped next weekend, with the full lineup of Denizens beers arriving sometime in September. In the meantime, Denizens' four other taps are pouring Brewers Art Resurrection, Alagash White, Starr Hill Pilsner and Devils Backbone Vienna Lager. (Sadly, there are no happy hour specials.)

There's no kitchen yet, but the BBQ Bus food truck – one of our favorite mobile meat purveyors – will be serving food in the beer garden tonight from 5 to 9 p.m.

If you need a break from the sun, there's a small bar inside. The much larger lower level, which you may remember from the building's previous incarnations as Izora, Gallery, Babe's or Fajita Coast, will be ready in August, according to the bartender.
