Yep, that Old Bay fried chicken sandwich is as good as it looks

Skeptics emerged, of course, after Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken announced its newest creation, an Old Bay fried chicken doughnut sandwich. "Old Bay doughnut embodies all that is wrong with the D.C. food scene," tweeted @FoodCurmudgeon. "When is this awful "lets put Old Bay on everything" fad going to end?" said Post commenter schnauzer21.

As they say, haters gonna hate. But after eating one today, I can attest that the sandwich is just as good as it looks -- and it sure looks good, doesn't it?

For those wondering about getting enough bang for their nine bucks, it's appropriately sized for the price. But if you want to try one, you had better get yourself to Astro as soon as it opens: Today, the sandwich sold out within an hour, and the shop's other sandwiches -- the fried chicken BLT and Buffalo chicken -- quickly followed, said co-owner Elliott Spaisman. More Old Bay sandwiches should be available tomorrow -- they only had about 60 today, Spaisman said -- but Fridays are typically Astro's busiest day, so Old Bay fans should plan to arrive at 11:30 a.m. to be sure to get one.

The sandwiches come with your choice of several sauces: barbecue, blue cheese, ranch, Sriracha buffalo or honey mustard dressing. We liked it best with the Sriracha, with the blue cheese coming in a close second.

Those lucky enough to snag one of these sandwiches should also be sure to grab extra napkins. Turns out, an Old Bay doughnut sandwich is almost as messy as a bucket of Old Bay-coated crabs; after only a few bites, I had the characteristic dusty, orange, spicy hands. I am pretty sure I still smell like Old Bay several hours (and hand-washing sessions) later. No regrets.
