Mason Dixie Biscuit Co. does late-night at Roofers Union

It was barely two hours into the Mason Dixie Biscuit Co. pop-up at the Dolcezza Gelato Factory and Coffee Lab this past Saturday when the team behind the forthcoming business ran out of its staple, buttery treat.

The high demand is a good sign for Mason Dixie. The brainchild of Ayeshah Abuelhiga, Mo Cherry and chef Jason Gehring (formerly of Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken) is trying to secure funds for a permanent space through a Kickstarter campaign. The Mason Dixie team also just secured an ongoing pop-up spot in the forthcoming Petworth food incubator, EatsPlace.

Katy Chang, founder and owner of EatsPlace, said Mason Dixie is "confirmed for weekday breakfast and lunch service," starting in September. Rejoice, biscuit fans.

Along with biscuit sandwiches -- including a fried chicken biscuit sandwich, and the bacon, fried egg and cheese sandwich we tried Saturday -- the Mason Dixie chefs will whip up homemade spreads: orange marmalade, hazelnut honey butter, bacon jam with apple butter and more. Mason Dixie will also have classic gravy and sweet tea to wash it all down.

Is it September yet?

In the meantime, Mason Dixie will be serving a late-night trio of biscuit sandwiches at Roofers Union in Adams Morgan, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 8-9, from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. or until they're gone. Cherry, one of the three team members behind Mason Dixie, previously worked with Meek-Bradley at Ripple in Cleveland Park.
