Momofuku’s David Chang says a D.C. restaurant is still on his radar

Aug. 13 update: Chang confirmed to Washingtonian that he plans to open a 4,500-square-foot restaurant in CityCenter DC in 2015.

As Vanity Fair noted recently, it's been 10 years since David Chang opened Momofuku Noodle Bar, the pork-bun and ramen joint that launched his career and transformed him into one of New York's most recognizable chefs, with restaurants, bars and sweet shops in three countries.

It's also been a decade since he snubbed D.C. by launching Momofuku in Manhattan, and not Georgetown, as Chang once considered. Which means that, for 10 long years, Washingtonians have waited patiently for the Northern Virginia native to open a restaurant on his home turf.

Rumors have circulated for months now that he was going to open a Momofuku at CityCenter DC in downtown Washington, perhaps sharing the same address as Daniel Boulud's forthcoming DBGB Kitchen and Bar. I had a chance to ask Chang about those rumors this afternoon.

"Right now, it's just wishful thinking," Chang says. "It's on the radar, but nothing's done."

In other words, he has no lease in hand.

But Chang continues to play the tease to long-suffering Washingtonians.

"If it happens, it happens," he says. "I’d like it to. That’s all I can say.”

Perhaps he will own the Redskins before he opens a restaurant here.
