Seasonal Pantry's four-day fried chicken pop-up has been a hit: Admirers have lined up outside of the shop before opening every day. Thinking of heading over to Shaw for some chicken today or Saturday? Here are a few FYIs.
1. The chicken is made in batches. That means there's only so much available at a given time, and there are periodic sellouts while the Seasonal Pantry team preps a new batch. We were sixth in line on Thursday, but because everyone in front of us ordered the four piece chicken meal, there was only one drumstick left by the time we got to the front of the line. (Those gorgeous sandwiches that you may have seen on Twitter were only a Wednesday choice.) This meant that the person in line after us had to wait about 15 minutes for the next batch. The Seasonal Pantry team was good about giving updates about the wait time to the folks in line.
It was worth the wait, for sure -- perfectly spicy and crispy, with some bread and butter pickles to cool it down. However, there will be a different style of chicken featured each day, so you're more likely to encounter buttermilk brined chicken, or chicken and waffles, on subsequent days. Prices will vary for future offerings, but on Thursday, it was $4 for two pieces of thigh, and $9 for four pieces with pickles and bread. Today, they open at noon, but on Saturday, the last day of the pop-up, orders begin at 5:30 p.m.
2. Blue Duck Tavern's Naomi Gallego's doughnuts are beautiful. Just look at this coffee caramel custard-filled one:
But if you are planning to transport them anywhere, just know that they are delicate. They come in a bag, which un-prettied the icing by the time we got to our destination. Whatever. They still tasted fantastic.
3. There are a few seats outside of the shop, but if they're full, you don't have too many options for eating outdoors. Whatever you do, do NOT sit on the stoops of Seasonal Pantry's neighbors, because they will come out and yell at you, as we witnessed. You could try walking to the park at 7th and P streets, or down to the grassy area by the Carnegie Library, if you find yourself needing a seat. Or, you could take your food back to your office to make all of your coworkers jealous.
