Mighty Pint ditches the Steelers for a farm-to-table restaurant concept

The Pittsburgh-themed restaurant, known for packed Steelers viewing parties, plates of pierogis and dirt-cheap happy hours, closed its doors at the end of July to deal with plumbing repairs and venue maintenance.

While it was closed, however, the ownership "decided to move forward with re-branding the concept," according to an e-mail from Meredith Wells, the marketing director for the Mighty Pint and its sister bars, Irish Whiskey and Copperwood Tavern.

The result will be Second State, "a Pennsylvania themed farm-to-table restaurant with craft cocktails, a locally sourced menu and Pennsylvania beers," Wells wrote. The new name is a nod to history: Pennsylvania was the second state to ratify the Constitution in December 1787, five days after Delaware.

With the upscaling from tavern to restaurant, comes a downside: "Being that we will now be a restaurant, we will be unable to host [Pittsburgh Steelers] game watches at Second State," Wells wrote. This is an especially tough blow for fans, because the Pour House, the area's most popular Steelers bar, closed this spring.

Never fear, displaced Pittsburghers: Wells said that the Mighty Pint's owners talked to the owners of the Tortoise and Hare in Crystal City, and that bar "will be welcoming all of our Steelers fans" this fall. Feel like Crystal City is too far to go for an Iron City Light? D.C. Steeler Nation reports that Capitol Lounge will be hosting Pittsburgh fans on Capitol Hill this season, complete with pieogi and kielbasa specials on game days. (How that will go down with the Lounge's regular crowd of Detroit Lions fans remains to be seen.)
