To use a wine term, a year can dramatically the terroir in Northern Virginia’s wine country.
If you made the trek to Virginia wineries a couple of years ago, you might have sipped a few cab francs, Norton blends and chambourcins, snacked on a baguette and called it a day.
This fall, the countryside will prove even more city-dweller friendly: You now can taste notes of sarsaparilla and roasted barley at a new brewery, hit the wineries by bike and sit for a formal tasting at the former home of a Supreme Court chief justice. And oh, yes, there are “yoga burgers.”
The next few months are prime time for leaf-peepers and wine lovers, as a wash of oranges, yellows and reds sweeps over the landscape and grape-harvest season gets underway.
Plan your trip now with our new guide to wineries (and a brewery!) to visit this fall, and our gallery of scenes from the road, above. And since a full stomach is a good idea for those sipping wine, we’ve also found stops to make along the way, including where to pick apples, grab a farm-to-table burger and stock up on sundries.
